Maxim Rehearsing The Kairn of KoridwenI just had my first ever experience playing the celeste. I played the celeste part in Charles Griffes’ The Kairn of Koridwen, which is scored for piano, harp, celeste, two horns, two clarinets, and a flute. This was such an awesome experience! I loved the music. It had so many different sections and moods and harmonies throughout the piece.

I played with the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players, and the musicians were AMAZING! I had to count really long rests when I didn’t play, and then try to come in at the perfect time. Now I know what percussionists feel like. A celeste, in case you don’t know, looks like a very small piano but has hammers that strike metal plates instead of strings. It sounds almost like bells.

I absolutely loved the experience of being engulfed by sound. If you listen to the video, I come in after about 4 minutes (the piece is over half an hour long).
