MaximLando_LangLangAs a Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Musical Foundation, I am starting to have so many exciting new opportunities. In October, I had the chance to play four hands with the superstar pianist Lang Lang! We were scheduled to preform a four-hand arrangement of Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca on the radio.

During our rehearsal, I asked Lang Lang if he would consider playing Fazil Say’s awesome jazzy arrangement of the same piece instead. He agreed right away! After we played through it once (Lang Lang sight reading), we decided that it would be fun to play it for the radio. We performed the duet that evening on a live WQXR broadcast (I also played some solo Prokofiev). I really love that Lang Lang is always so relaxed when he plays, and also that he is so much fun as a person!

The four other U.S. Young Scholars (all amazing pianists) also came to perform on the radio and I really felt inspired listening to them. We had an opportunity to hang out together and became really good friends. I was so happy to learn that through the Lang Lang Foundation we will be doing many programs together over the next few years!

See both of my WQXR performances below…
